Who has my back?

Today I received this envelope with “President Barack Obama” as the “return address”.  It was from the Democratic National Committee, begging for money yet again.

What got me was the “Do you still have my back?” message that was supposedly from the president.  I was an Obama supporter both times he ran for president, true, but in his four and a half years as president he has allowed the NSA to continue to commit the most egregious crimes ever against the citizens of this country.  I would have expected this behavior out of Romney or a Bush sort, but for a guy who tried to paint himself as a “change” candidate, he has really managed to ruin any good impressions I might have had of him.

Now, instead of being someone that I was willing to defend as a “good guy,” I am back to picking him as the lesser of two evils.  While I have appreciated what has been labelled as “Obamacare” as the best deal he could get out of the corporate Congress, it is a lukewarm endorsement at best. What I have now is this massive immoral and illegal domestic spying operation, paid for out of my tax money, and Obama’s Executive powers being used to hunt down and destroy the people who have had the cojones to bring these crimes to light.  Shooting the messenger does not solve the problem, and it is usually a mistake under the best of circumstances.

While I am aware that the President does not have the time or wherewithal to find out all of the schemes that the D. C. bureaucracy is running, I would expect someone with any real sense of right and wrong to deal with something like this in an intelligent fashion, instead of continuing the crimes.  Going after the messengers as criminals and accusing them of treason is the typical underhanded politics-as-usual garbage we have come to expect out of the Republicans, so to see Mr. Obama doing this has destroyed any hope I had for real change to come out of this president.

So, to ask the question that really matters:   “Mr. President, have you ever had MY back?”

Addendum 06 October 2013 - I have to correct one phrase in my original post -  this latest NSA imbroglio is NOT “the most egregious crime” the government has committed, but it still is an amazing and disgusting overreach.  I leave the phrase in the above because it captures my emotional reaction, but the facts require that I at least put a correction here.
