Stop the Death Squads

Tweety Amin long ago started giving his approval to extrajudicial brutality and killings. He did it blatantly with his infamous “Good people on both sides” Charlottesville, VA comment. He did it with his unceasing hostility to the BLM protests even though they were justified. He did it when he sent anonymous terror troops to kidnap BLM protestors. He has repeatedly done it with his tacit approval of police killings of innocents. But on January 6th, he crossed a bright red line. He incited a mob to attack the U. S. Capitol; he went from approving to inciting.

The good news is that the death squads are just starting to warm up. The bad news is that they are just starting to warm up. So far they have only killed a few people at a time, which is also why they are not on the average citizen’s radar. So far they have killed mostly blacks, so most people don’t feel threatened by them. All of this is changing frighteningly fast. Until now, the fake president hadn’t been so blatant about his support or so obvious about inciting them. Now that he has started, things are likely to take off.

While death squads have long been a feature of dictators’ “stay in power” strategies, they have not figured quite as strongly in American national politics. The last major round of KKK violence petered out a half-century ago, and until the fake president went to Washington, they had been mostly quiet. Since the orange fascist started stirring them up, though, they have been crawling out of every woodpile, along with Nazis and new groups that popped up just to be fascist storm troopers - not-really-christian right-wing terrorists.

The FBI and the rest of law enforcement have been ignoring these groups as much as they could, probably because the fake president wants them to run freely as long as possible and stir up as much shit as they can. Since the fascists have been running the so-called Justice Department, law enforcement hasn’t been allowed to really do anything about them. That is ending as the adults take over in Washington.

Another reason that the right wing killers won’t stay off the radar is the January 6th Capitol debacle. We are just fortunate that the attack execution was up to the current Whitehouse’s usual standards, i.e. completely disorganized and haphazard, so very little actual damage occurred, and the terrorists only killed a few. For once, we can be thankful that the liar-in-chief has no clue what competence and professionalism are.

The warning shot over the bow has been fired, and we have all seen our fill of it. Unless the death squads are stomped out of existence immediately, they will collect more military and law enforcement professionals and become dangerous. Right now, even the Proud Boys are little more than a slightly violent annoyance. Still, there are an awful lot of fascists among the various police and military that are itching to do some killing and destroying, and they will bring some of their professionalism and skill to the death squads. The result could be as murderous as any death squads ever given that they have the best weapons in history available to them.
