The Government is Governing

If you take a minute and listen to the sounds of D. C., You hear something that has been missing for over four years - the sounds of a functioning government. Four years ago, all you could hear was the screaming of tortured metal, the crashing of sledgehammers, and the tearing of law books and the Constitution into shreds as the orange fascist was starting his destructive rampage. In many ways, it is a small miracle that the adults who have moved in have managed to restart the machinery given the horrible wreckage and scorched earth they inherited. The orange cult did its best to destroy what they could not corrupt, but apparently, the institutions of democracy are more durable than anyone gave them credit for being.

That is not to say that there wasn’t a LOT of damage done. The DeJoy and DeVos crowd have destroyed decades of work, and the damage control and rebuilding are just getting warmed up. The remaining fascists in the legislative branch are doing their absolute worst to keep that from happening, but if they try too hard, they will find themselves in even worse shape. At the current rate, they are likely to lose the remaining obstructionist tool they have in the senate as the filibuster disappears, and Joe Manchin in the house is very likely to find himself primaried and worse if he keeps up the blue dog act.

While the adults are cleaning up and rebuilding the democracy, there is still a mountain of raw sewage that remains to be dealt with in the form of the violent lunacy of the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers, and the rest of the Hitler-wannabe’s brown shirts. With the fake president showing the rest of his fascist credentials on his way out, his exit’s violence has left a nasty toxic residue that will take a long time to sanitize and deodorize. I doubt that even the idiotic base (that still believes the “big lie”) will stand for the violence for long, though. Sadly, since the fascists failed to take over entirely in their four-year window, they have turned to anarchy to try to destroy what is left. This will be a problem for law enforcement for quite a while.

In the meantime, the “big lie” is fading as people wake up and realize they didn’t want fascism anyway. The Ronnie Raygun-era “Unholy Alliance” between the white supremacist “conservative nationalist” movement and the Koch-driven corporate fascists has frayed drastically, probably beyond repair unless Moscow Mitch can perform miracles. CPAC is showing its false conservative credentials, so as the fascists continue to destroy their credibility, they will disappear into their proper place in the dumpster as well to keep the dead cats and rotten fish company.

For the first time in over four years, we can hope that our country will become a better place for people to live. After watching our country’s governance going downhill continuously since Nixon, I am hopeful that we have hit bottom and that we are actually on the way up. It is truly sad to say that even just leveling out for a while would be a pleasant change, but there is real hope for a positive turn as the public has awakened, at least a little, to just how bad we have let things get.
