MLK’s NightmareWith Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming up and George Santos in the news, it seems like a thoroughly appropriate time to point out just how far we have fallen away from Dr. King’s ideals. I was much too young to remember the original “I have a dream” speech, and my parents would never have watched or listened to it anyway. Instead, I found my way back to it time and time again over the years after I learned to read. I grew up with the ideals of love, freedom and equality that the 1960s are known for, and to this day I still hold on to them. For may people, King’s speech crystallized the civil rights movement into a palpable reality, making the needs of the black community and the reasons for their unrest clear. The single line that has stuck with me my whole life is:
With the fascist takeover of the GOP and the election of lowlife scam artists like the orange hitler-wannabe and now Santos, it is a good time to look at how far the country has sunk into the morass of kleptocracy and white supremacy In my lifetime, we have never been further from King’s dream. The color of our skin matters more than ever, and the content of our character is irrelevant, at least if the current state of the GOP is any example.
