What Does the Orange Clown see in the Mirror?

Nobody sees themselves as a Monster, but what do they see?

As a writer of fiction, I have been told that I need to inhabit the souls of my characters, both the heroes and the villains. I can’t seem to get there with the villains.

I needed a hitler-wannabe former-fake-president to be the bad guy that drives the south to secede again. I couldn’t figure out how to write the orangutan, so I made him the dead saint of the Confederacy. He actually does better that way than his visibly insane self is playing in reality, so maybe he should take a hint. Certainly he is not doing himself any good with all of the lunacy he has been babbling.

I have been avoiding trying to write the next bad guy I need - a fringe-freak liar on a loathsome cable news channel that spreads the toxins in place of the dead saint. What does Tucker see in the mirror? Does he think of all of the lies he will tell today? Is he proud of the sewer gas he blows the entire time he is on the tubes of his idiot followers? Or worse, does he believe the QAnon and Putin-generated horseshit he spouts?

From the stuff coming out in the various lawsuits that Tucker’s employer is in the process of losing, it doesn’t appear that he is stupid enough to buy the garbage. He sure didn’t believe the orange toddler’s election lies, anyway, so he knows that he is lying, constantly and completely. How does he face that in the mirror? Does the fat wallet make up for the vacuum in the soul?

Apparently I am too limited to peer into the souls of the truly evil. Perhaps I should go back to programming - at least the computers don’t lie to me. No, I don’t mess with AI - artificial stupidity is no better than the real-life stupidity that the fright wing constantly poisons everything with, so why would I bother?
