The Truth is Far Worse than Just “Guilty”

Back when I was growing up, it was not all that uncommon to hear of a plea of “non compos mentis” in a criminal trial. In cases of violent crime, the legal theory went, the person who committed the crime was in the throes of violent emotions, and therefore temporarily insane.

In the case of the orangutan, that plea is the one they should have used to keep him out of jail as well. In his case, the insanity is not temporary, of course, but there are two very obvious things that make it valid. The first is that he is slipping mentally even below his previous very low intellectual standard thanks to condition or conditions unknown. His present mental condition is such that he is not capable of comprehending the nature or seriousness of the crimes he is being convicted of.

The other obvious point is that he is not capable of telling right from wrong, full stop. He never has been able to. His third-grade functioning level just has never gotten that far. It has been obvious since he first stepped out onto the campaign trail that he can’t tell the difference between lies and truth. This is nothing new, of course, but in this legal situation it is relevant. Part of the logic of putting someone in jail in our legal system is that they are capable of comprehending the nature and seriousness of their crime and its punishment, and the orange hitler is simply not capable of that level of reasoning.

The sad-but-funny part of this situation is that there is no way that the dictator-wannabe would ever let his legal team use this defense, because it would be the end of his political career. Truth has never been part of the former pseudo-president’s worldview, and since all he cares about is the power he craves, it won’t enter the discussion at this point. It would only get him out of jail and into a mental institution anyway, but that is where he belongs.

The rest of the Trump family belongs in jail - none of them have so-far shown the inability to tell truth from falsehood, for instance. They know when they lie. The orange moron doesn’t know the difference, and does not belong in jail because of that basic fact. He has never been able to comprehend the difference between right and wrong. He belongs in a mental institution.

I do love the optics of the presidential campaign, though. “Vote for the Loon” “Crazies Unite” - too much truth there, eh?
